Effortless Expansion Episode #007: 3 Myths About Meditation

Let me just start by saying that I was one of those people who was simply not a meditation believer at all. Honestly, the thought of sitting there spending 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes in the quiet was not appealing to me.

You see, I was a perfectionist, a self-proclaimed queen of multitasking and I could not fathom sitting and meditating when I could be doing a zillion other things on my to-do list.

But here's what happened… over a series of events that kept bringing meditation to me, I decided to try it. My girlfriend, my best friend since we were five, kept raving about meditation and Dr. Joe Dispenza’s books. I decided to dive in and learn all I could.

I started with Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself by Dr. Joe Dispenza. There is an accompanying meditation that you can buy on his website along with the meditations. Buy the book here and the meditation here.

To be quite honest, it was not an awesome experience at first. I found myself constantly drifting away in thought thinking about the million things on my to-do list and it was plain uncomfortable, as new things often are.

I didn't enjoy it at first. And if you know me, I live everything in my life by what feels good. But this was a big turning point for me and I wanted to do things differently. After I did my research, read the books, and learned about the incredible benefits people were experiencing I knew I wanted to experience that too. I made the choice to go ALL IN for 6 weeks. After all, what did I have to lose?

I decided to stop getting mad at myself for my mind wandering and release all expectations.

I can’t believe I’m saying this… I fell in love with meditation.

My body craves it. I feel like a dog in anticipation for a walk.

Now let’s get into 3 common myths about meditation.

Myth #1: It’s a bunch of woo-woo for super spiritual people or people who need help.

Listen, I know why you might think that. Here’s the bottom line, meditation can be anything and everything you want. You can use it to connect to your spirituality, to heal your body, manifest your desires, or to simply reduce stress. You get to choose.

Myth #2: You have to spend an hour every day meditating.

This one holds validity but it is not true. Any amount of time meditating is incredible and will benefit you. I know how busy life can be and I can tell you first hand I would rather make time for a short meditation rather than not doing one at all. With that being said, the longer you meditate the deeper you will go and the more benefits you will experience.

If you want to start with something simple, I created an 11 minute meditation that is super powerful. You can grab it for free on my website here.

Myth #3: You can only meditate in the perfect environment.

While I can’t argue that a special place is lovely, and there are magical places to meditate, it’s not required. You can meditate on a plane, on vacation, or even in your best friend’s closet.

Fair warning, this limiting belief, this myth will get in the way of you meditating if you let it be true. For me, consistency is key and I make time no matter the circumstance.
